In the summer of 2007, I found myself participating in my first World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR). It all started when I met my good friend Will through an online nudist community. Our immediate connection and shared passion for social nudity led us to explore various legal nude spots and resorts together. As we bonded over this unique lifestyle, Will couldn't stop raving about his experiences with the WNBR. And so, finally feeling brave enough to take the plunge, I joined him on this exhilarating ride through the city streets. The warm sun beat down on our bare skin as we pedaled confidently through the bustling streets, surrounded by a diverse group of like-minded individuals. The rush of adrenaline and sense of freedom were unlike anything I had ever experienced before. Looking back now, I can say that it was one of the most memorable and liberating moments of my life.
Despite discussing it with Will and seeing pictures beforehand, I couldn't quite envision what the experience would be like. From my understanding, the ride began as a bold statement against society's reliance on oil. But it had evolved into something more - a way to protest, promote, and celebrate a multitude of causes while baring it all in the process. It was perfect, in my opinion. As I joined the ride that day, I saw a diverse group of individuals - of different genders, ethnicities, ages, and sizes - all coming together for a common cause. Amidst the crowd were tall and short riders, skinny and round ones, some with hair covering their bodies and others completely smooth, adorned with tattoos or not. But despite our differences, we were all united by our jovial spirits and determination to make a statement.
As the group of riders gathered, anticipation hung thick in the air. I eagerly joined in, shedding my clothes and feeling the warmth of the sun on my bare skin. Around me, others followed suit, baring their bodies and inhibitions as we prepared for our journey. Some wore masks or other coverings to maintain anonymity, a wise choice considering the cameras flashing at the starting point and along the route. Others chose to use body paint to make bold statements with written messages scrawled across their skin. The vibrant colors and bold words added to the electric energy pulsing through the group. We were a tribe of free spirits, ready to embark on an adventure together.
As we rode, Will winked at me, knowing that I was relishing the freedom of being naked in public. A police escort surrounded us, ensuring that everything went smoothly along the route. And although it may have seemed strange to some, the reactions from onlookers were surprisingly positive. Many stopped to take pictures, some laughing and finding it amusing while others were fascinated by our boldness. Shouts of encouragement could be heard all around us, with some expressing their admiration for our courage while also admitting they could never do the same. It was a refreshing sight to see such support for public nudity in society. As we reached the end of the ride, we found ourselves in a spot in the city that one wouldn't expect to find social nudity. But here we were, embraced by a true sense of community among the riders. And as always, when it was time to put back on clothes, a sense of sadness washed over me. Why couldn't this sense of freedom and acceptance extend beyond a single bike ride? But before I could dwell on it too much, Will smiled at me and said "Until next year." I eagerly agreed, longing for another chance to shed society's expectations and embrace my true self once again.
If you are fortunate enough to come across a ride that is near your city, I highly recommend seizing the opportunity. However, if privacy is a concern, beware of taking pictures and consider taking precautions to avoid being recognized by others. And safety first - wear a helmet!
